Although they say it’s lucky to be pooed on by a bird, most would agree that luck probably runs out when it happens after a flight – and your suitcase is the one that takes the hit.

Social media users were quick to flap after photos showed what appeared to be a generous helping of bird droppings splattered across luggage on the conveyor belt at Jersey Airport.

Following queries from Express, a spokesperson from Ports of Jersey said: “The baggage belts were cleaned as soon as the team was made aware this morning.

“We will continue to monitor the situation for any reoccurrence in case there are any birds still present in the area.”

Some passengers expressed concern about picking up something other than their luggage, worrying about hygiene and health risks.

Commenting on the Facebook post, Mark Mulholland wrote: “Pigeon droppings pose health dangers through the transmission of fungal and bacterial infections, such as histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and psittacosis, primarily by inhaling contaminated dust or by contact with surfaces.”

Others, however, weren’t so easily ruffled.

Terry Chapman commented: “I don’t care as long as my luggage arrives intact. Wipe your case with an anti bacterial wipe if you’re a snowflake, problem solved.”

Mary Terry added: “Oh for goodness sake if this was all you are worried about in the world so long as your case arrives! It’s not about the journey it’s the destination. A bit of bird poo seriously.”
