It’s not often that you get the opportunity to unapologetically sing and dance outside in public, surrounded by nature and a setting sun.
But that is exactly the evening and weekend entertainment on offer every summer at Coronation Park thanks to the Jersey Arts Centre’s annual concert series.
Set amongst the birds and trees, islanders get the chance to sing their hearts out or bask in a variety of musical genres brought to audiences from local and national musicians.
Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to revel in an evening of disco and funk. Not your average Tuesday that’s for sure.

Getting myself comfortable on the grass with my hot fish and chips from The Kiosk down the road, the hubbub of excitement before the show surrounding me, I thought ‘what a perfect way to spend a summer evening’.
Soon enough, mood-lifting tunes from the exclusively formed local band SupaFunk! spread through the trees and got the night off to a great start. No pressure, chilled atmosphere and great music.
Next up came Sue Darwar, a UK disco sensation, who upped the already high energy to get people in the mood to groove. And that she did.
As the light dropped, disco lovers flocked to the stage to jump and jive. Even though I wasn’t in the dancing mood, it was a fabulous display to witness.

What I enjoy most about the JAC summer concerts is the freedom they allow the audience to have.
During the evening, people could sing and dance in disco colours, picnic in peace or chat away with friends amongst the backdrop of good beats.
Moreover, you can bring your home comforts with you, be it a blanket, deck chair or flask full of tea. It’s live entertainment at its most inviting and which is why it should be supported.
If you are a music lover and appreciate the technicalities of a melody, or perhaps you can’t stop yourself on joining in on a musical number, the JAC concert series has a programme to suit everyone.
Continuing throughout the week until Sunday 17 August, with evenings dedicated to country music, soul and bollywood and musicals, more information and tickets for the summer concert series can be found here.
