Over the last couple of years, the world has considerably changed. The international trading landscape has seen a culmination of Brexit, Covid and a boom in parcel volumes and eCommerce growth. Jersey Post, along with other postal authorities across the world, are seeing a shift in demand and transforming to become global parcel delivery networks to meet the requirements of the huge shift in the industry.

Moving things around the world isn’t quite as simple as it once was. The increase in demand brings with it higher levels of complexity, including tighter border security and increased fiscal requirements around the transportation of goods and merchandise. As a result, providing the correct customs information is more important than ever before.

As of 1 April 2022, to comply with overseas customs requirements, all items being sent outside of Jersey that contain goods and/or merchandise will require extra customs information in the form of electronic pre-advice customs data. This information needs to be sent in advance to the receiving country ahead of the item arriving at its destination. Jersey Post announced that providing electronic pre-advice customs information would be required for the sending of goods internationally from January 2021, but this now also applies for any items being sent outside of Jersey, including to the UK, Isle of Man or any other Channel Islands. 

Jersey Post has implemented changes to internal systems and processes that electronically capture the sender, receiver, and parcel contents information, including the individual weight, quantity, and value of each item within a parcel. This information must be shared electronically and in advance to the destination postal authority and customs offices for fiscal, risk, security, and border clearance purposes, in line with national and international legislation.

The simplest and most convenient way for customers to provide this new information is through Jersey Post’s new and improved online postage portal, as all the newly required customs information is captured throughout the process and can be printed from the comfort of home or work. 

Providing electronic pre-advice customs information allows postal authorities, such as Jersey Post, to enable a more straightforward and slicker customs clearance process for recipients, resulting in faster, more successful deliveries. Items that do not have pre-advice customs information may be held in customs in the destination country, occur additional charges, be returned or, in some cases, destroyed.
