Alastair Chalmers retained his British 400m hurdles title in Birmingham on Sunday, all-but guaranteeing him a slot in this summer’s European Championships.
But that wasn’t even the highlight of his week, with Chalmers’ Fathers’ Day triumph coming just days after he became a dad for the first time.
Chalmers took the UK Athletics Championships title for a sixth time, with a time of 49.05, before rushing over to celebrate with his fiancée Ellie Bell and their five-day-old son.
The Guernsey-born Olympian won the race comfortably, being clear of the drama behind him when rival Tyri Donovan fell at the penultimate hurdle, and even being able to ease off slightly in the final few metres.
In a statement on social media, Chalmers and his fiancée told fans their “hearts are full, and we could not be more in love”, since the arrival of the 8lb 15oz baby.
Chalmers is due to compete for Guernsey at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games this summer, while also pursuing his place at this summer’s European Championships.
