Alastair Chalmers wins gold in the Guernsey 2023 Island Games.

Alastair Chalmers has brought the curtain down on his indoor season with a strong closing relay leg at the European Indoor Athletics Championships last night.

The GB men’s team finished fourth in their final in Apeldoorm.

Chalmers produced the quickest split of the team, 45.49s, but could not run them into the medals.

Alex Haydock-Wilson ran the opening leg in 46.60s, handing over to Efekemo Okoro in third. GB had slipped to fifth after his leg (47.20s), but put themselves in with a shout of a medal when Joshua Fields made up one spot (46.20s).

The Netherlands delighted their home fans with the win (3:04.95), followed by Spain, (3:05.18) and Belguim (ST). GB finished in 3:05.49.

At the start of the week, Chalmers was part of the mixed 4x400m team that won bronze.

The GB squad finished eighth in the medal table with one gold, three silvers and three bronze medals.

Chalmers returns to the hurdles and now concentrates on the outdoor season which includes the World Championships from 13 to 21 September in Tokyo.

“Wasn’t to be today but it’s racing. Very decent indoors, excited to get back over the sticks now,” Chalmers said on Instagram.
