For the last 22 years Arsenal haven’t needed any help throwing away titles.

The Gunners have lost more titles from winning positions than any other team since the their legendary unbeaten season in 2003/2004.

But that didn’t stop Guernsey’s Alex Scott giving them a helping hand this year, by slotting home the winning goal as Bournemouth beat the north London side 2-1.

The sides were level coming up to a quarter of an hour to go, when Scott ran on to Brazilian teammate Evanilson’s flick on the edge of the penalty area and hammered the ball past goalkeeper David Raya’s right hand to stun the home crowd.

The Arsenal and Manchester City badges laid on some short grass.

With perennial champions Manchester City breathing down their necks, and a mouth-watering clash between the two sides next Sunday, Scott’s 74th-minute strike could prove pivotal in the title race.

Arsenal are still ahead, but with a game in hand the title is now back in Manchester City’s hands – if they beat Arsenal at the weekend.

There are sure to be plenty of twists and turns in the next six weeks, but if Arsenal fail to hold on to their lead, fans may come to rue the name Alex Scott.

It will also come as a welcome boost for the former Guernsey FC player’s chances of making the England squad for the World Cup, after he missed out on a place at manager Thomas Tuchel’s latest training camp.
