Tomorrow will see the start of the 100 day countdown until the 2025 International Island Games in Orkney begin.

To launch the countdown we can reveal the specifically crafted medals that will be presented to each podium-placed athlete this summer.

Sponsored by leading Orcadian jewellery designer Sheila Fleet OBE, the medals’ design was curated by 23-year-old Jodie Brown, whose sketch won a Creative Orkney competition to design all 1272 medals.

Jodie, who is from Kirkwall, will receive her own commemorative set and she’ll have the chance present a medal to a podium-placed athlete during the Games.

The medals’ ribbon was designed by Olivia Yorston, whose concept represents the flag colours of Orkney and features all official Island Games logos.

Ms Fleet said Jodie has created a “very iconic design with so much that symbolises Orkney’s rich cultural heritage”.

“As a medal it has great impact,” she continued.

“It shows the real potential of an up-and-coming designer, so we are absolutely thrilled to have given Jodie the opportunity to work with us on the design of a new Standing Stones collection that will be launched around one month before the Games.”

Kirsty Talbot, Director of Orkney 2025, said the look is perfect for the Games legacy.

“It is extremely fitting that the medals designed for the athletes of Orkney 2025 celebrate Orkney’s iconic landscape and will be a perfect tribute to the winning athletes who compete in our Games.

“With only 100 days to go until we welcome the world, excitement is building and we are very much looking forward to creating positive memories which will last a lifetime.”

Minister of Business for Scotland, Richard Lochhead, added: “The medals are a powerful example of how the Games are being supported locally, as Orkney seizes the incredible and exciting opportunity to showcase these amazing islands when the Games take place in July.”

The Orkney Games take place between 12 and 18 July this summer.

It’s the first time Orkney will host the international event, with around 2,000 athletes from 24 islands travelling to Scotland from across the globe to compete in 12 sports: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Bowls, Cycling, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Sailing, Squash, Swimming, and Triathlon.

Known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Orkney is preparing for an influx of visitors during Games week with athletes, coaches, and spectators all attending its biggest ever event.

The Games are supported by principal funders the Scottish Government and Orkney Island Council. More than 800 volunteers are supporting the event with vital roles including stewarding events and supporting athletes and spectators.

The Opening Ceremony and Athletes’ Parade will take place in Kirkwall on Saturday 12 July, hosted by ITV presenter Lorraine Kelly
