England came out on the losing side in their game against Germany in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship group stages.

Guernsey’s Alex Scott scored England’s only goal in the 2 – 1 defeat, tapping home from an Omari Hutchinson cross.

Despite the defeat, England qualified for the knockout rounds of the tournament as runners-up in Group, meaning they will now face Spain in the quarter-finals.

Spain came top of Group A with 7 points, having secured wins against Slovakia (3-2) and Romania (2-1), and drawing 1-1 with Italy in their final group match.

Italy also qualified from Group A as runners-up, matching Spain’s 7 points, with victories over Romania (1-0) and Slovakia (1-0), and the aforementioned 1-1 draw against Spain.

In Group B, Germany topped the group with a perfect 9 points after winning all three of their matches, (3-0 against Slovenia, 4-2 against Czechia, and the 2-1 victory over England).

England finished second in this group with 4 points, following a 3-1 win against Czechia, a goalless draw with Slovenia, and their 1-2 loss to Germany.

In Group C, Portugal claimed the top spot with 7 points. They started with a 0-0 draw against France, then delivered emphatic victories of 5-0 against Poland and 4-0 against Georgia.

France also progressed from Group C as runners-up, also on 7 points, with their 0-0 draw against Portugal, a 3-2 win over Georgia, and a 4-1 triumph against Poland.

Lastly, in Group D, Denmark finished as group winners with 7 points, achieving a 3-2 win against Ukraine, a 2-1 victory over Netherlands, and a 2-2 draw with Finland.

The Netherlands secured the final quarter-final qualification spot with 4 points, after drawing 2-2 with Finland, losing 1-2 to Denmark, and then winning a crucial 2-0 match against Ukraine.

England face Spain next, while Portugal face the Netherlands, Germany take on Italy, and Denmark are up against France, to determine the four teams that will progress to the semi-finals.
