Body recovered from sea

Monday 06 July 2015

The RNLI recovered a body from the sea off Jersey's coast on Saturday afternoon after a huge search and rescue operation involving a French helicopter.

The body has not been formally identified but the search for 63 year-old former teacher John Renouf, who went missing on Friday, has been officially called off.

Police were concerned about the whereabouts of Mr Renouf on Friday and a big search for him was carried out around St Brelade on Friday night, involving a French Search and Rescue helicopter with night vision cameras.

The helicopter was called in to help as the emergency services and lifeboat crews scoured Portelet Common, cliffs and shoreline.

The emergency services were out looking for him again on Saturday morning but police confirmed later in the day that a man had been found by a French vessel and had been recovered from the sea to the East of the Island by the RNLI.

The police say Mr Renouf's family have now been notified.
