‘Jersey’s Best Workplace’ is back for its second year – and organisers are keen for local businesses to get involved in the initiative and unlock insights about their teams.

Created by All Island Media and CompassJersey, the employee engagement award aimed to identify the gold standard of staff satisfaction in the island.

During the inaugural competition last year, businesses were benchmarked against each other and received detailed analysis, with the winners revealed in May.

Express has been speaking to previous winners about the benefits of the contest and what it felt like to win.

St Martin’s Surgery won a spotlight award for “Line Management Excellence” last year.

Practice manager Lizzy de Carteret reflected on the experience…

What was it like to win an award in the inaugural Jersey’s Best Workplace?

It was genuinely exciting and very rewarding for us all.

The award felt like recognition for the everyday effort everyone puts in to make our workplace supportive and positive.

It definitely lifted morale and gave us all a sense of pride.

What motivated you to take part in the first place?

We saw it as a great chance to step back and really listen to our team’s experience, and to challenge ourselves to be even better.

Plus, supporting a local initiative that highlights the importance of workplace wellbeing was something we were happy to be part of.

Did the scheme benefit the firm in gathering employee insight?

Yes, the feedback was eye-opening in some areas and encouraging in others.

It gave us a clearer picture of what our staff value most and highlighted some practical steps we could take to improve.

Will it shape internal practices or strategies going forward?

For sure. The insights sparked some great discussions and helped us prioritise where to focus next – especially around communication and how we recognise people’s contributions.

Why do you believe fostering a great workplace culture is essential in attracting and retaining top talent in Jersey?

In Jersey, where the talent pool is smaller and competition is high, having a genuinely positive culture makes all the difference.

People want to work somewhere they feel respected and supported – it’s about more than just a paycheck.

Why do you think it is important to understand workplace culture?

Because culture influences everything – how people work, collaborate, and feel about their job.

When you understand it well, you can create an environment where everyone can do their best and stay motivated.
