How I unwind: Dominic Basilio, the Lockdown Hero hairdresser

Friday 28 July 2023

A local hairdresser who dedicates his spare time to good causes has shared what he does to relax...and avoid the greys.

Dominic Basilio runs his own salon on Brighton Road, Studio Phoenix.

In 2020, he won Express’s Lockdown Hero Award, sponsored by TMF, after working with the Salvation Army to set up its food bank during the first covid lockdown.

Since then, Dominic has played the role of Santa and the Easter Bunny for local children by collecting over 870 toys and 1,100 eggs through separate drives in December 2020 and early 2021. He also supported Mont A L’Abbé School with a drive to collect 1,000 bottles.

Last year, he organised his first ‘Summer Mini Day’ fundraiser to raise money for Brighter Futures.

For Express, the kind-hearted hairdresser has shared what are his favourite things to relax...

I eat...

crisps

I would love to say that I unwind by eating a salad, but not at all! I’m a snack monster and a big kid, so it's crisps, chocolate and cake.

I would definitely say I have a balance, though. Even since primary school, I can remember that as soon as I would get home, I would sit and watch TV, eating chocolate animal biscuits and crisps.

It may not be the healthiest choice, but it makes me happy, so…

I drink…

mug tea

I start off with a morning coffee and then tea, tea and more tea... with the occasional bottle of water when I’m trying to prove I’m healthy and have a balanced diet!

I listen to…

music listen headphones

I love music – all kinds, depending the mood, but mainly rock music.

I still listen to the same bands I did when I was a teen.

I watch…

tv.jpg

Any documentary or docuseries normally about serial killers, 'Meet, Marry, Murder', etc.

Don’t worry, I’m not picking up tips! I just find it interesting and like pretending I’m an expert and analysing.

I do…

travel plane

I wouldn’t say I have specific hobbies – I like a bit of everything.

I like to be active and spend a lot of time with my family, especially in the summer holidays. I like spending as much time with my nieces and nephews as possible. I like to push myself, so any activity that involves a bit of fear and adrenaline. Plenty of travel and sun!
