A local judo competitor has made history by winning gold and silver medals at an international tournament for Commonwealth countries — a first for the island.
Judo coach Bill Baker (48) said he was “honoured” to represent the island at the Commonwealth Judo Championships in Malta earlier this month.
Competing in the under 90 kilograms (half-heavyweight) division, the medalist secured silver in the veterans under 50s age category and gold in the groundwork category, defeating opponents from South Africa, Wales, and England
Mr Baker is the chair of the Jersey Judo Association and a director at Magellan Consultancy, a business consultancy firm.
He also represented Jersey as a delegate at the Congress of Commonwealth Judo, which aims to promote and develop judo throughout the Commonwealth nations
Mr Baker said: "It's always a great honour to represent Jersey at international events alongside other nations.
"I believe it's the first time Jersey has won medals at this event and I'm very grateful for the support from all my coaches, training partners and family which made this possible."
