SAMPHIRE ENSEMBLE – SOUNDINGS

An immersive live music and multimedia performance comes to St James this Friday the 29th May!

The Samphire Ensemble, directed by David le Page, invites you to their immersive live music and multimedia performance, ‘Soundings’. The ensemble will take you on a journey around Guernsey’s coastline, capturing the character, atmosphere and stories of the island through sounds, imagery and classical performance.

Combining original compositions, classical and contemporary repertoire including Bowie, Radiohead, Hans Zimmer, Vivaldi and Grieg, field recordings from coastal locations, projected visuals and spoken word, Soundings explores the idea of where one thing becomes another – land and sea, past and present, noise and music.

Through music and projections, the Samphire Ensemble creates a rich, accessible and evocative portrait of Guernsey that invites you to experience the island as a living soundscape.

Get ready for an unforgettable experience, as the Samphire ensemble and St James invite you to sit back and immerse yourself in Soundings.

THE SCRIBES, WITH TANE

We’re back at St James this Saturday the 30th May from 7pm, as the team welcome The Scribes at The Pit, a multi-award winning hip hop act from Bristol whose unique talents have combined to make a trademark sound quite unlike any other! Featuring a seamless blend of live instrumentation and sampling set against a backdrop of head nodding boom bap breaks.

Known for their impressive and engaging live act, The Scribes are hotly tipped as ‘one to watch’ with live dates across the UK and Europe. Having shared the stage with the likes of Macklemore, Wu Tang Clan, Dizzee Rascal, Kelis, Rag N Bone Man, Example, Lethal Bizzle, The Wailers, Jurassic 5, Sugarhill Gang, KRS One, De La Soul, MF Doom, and Souls Of Mischief to name (drop) but a few, The Scribes are rapidly gaining a solid fan base for themselves and making waves in the world of HipHop.

Support comes from French outfit Tane, plus DJ Woody.

Tane is a dub/electro/rock project that fuses deep, original melodies to create atmospheric, genre blending soundscapes. Created by Antoine Tardivel aka TANE the project has rapidly become a vibrant collective of musicians. Tane’s compositions sculpt unique tracks, performed by the band and adorned with the emblematic voice of hip hop artist DUP (Percubaba).

Art at the Park: Earth Matters by Bridget Spinney – LAST CHANCE

Art at the Park’s latest exhibition by Bridget Spinney, entitled ‘Earth Matters’, comes to a close next Friday the 5th June.

Running at the National Trust of Guernsey’s Art at the Park Gallery at the Folk and Costume Museum, opening times are 10am until 5pm daily. The exhibition will close at 2pm on the final day.

“I have always believed we should respect and live in balance with nature. My recent work has been preoccupied with a project called ‘The Art of Nature on Paper’. It is borne from a concern for the environment and how it has become saturated with chemicals and plastic.

Using natural mediums, charcoal, cuttlefish ink and homemade inks, to create art facilitated by local nature on paper, I am hoping to promote a kinder and more sympathetic way of living. Promoting pesticide and plastic free living.”

Don’t miss your opportunity to view this fabulous showcase! The Art at the Park Gallery is accessible-friendly and free of charge.

Response: The Split Collective at the Gate House Gallery and St Peter’s Church

“An artwork is not complete until it is received by others. Art lives in our
response. The spectator, the listener, is as important as the doer.” – Helen Martineau, Prodigal Daughters.

The Rectory at St Peter’s Church and the Gate House Gallery are pleased to present
Response, an exhibition of painting and sculpture by the Split Collective.
A response is a reply, an answer, a reaction. It implies correspondence, connection,
conversation.

A response, be it an affirmation, a question, a defence or rebuttal, can be the building block of a meaningful relationship, an opportunity for enlightenment or just the chance to engage in playful banter. The eighty-odd works of sculpture, painting, drawing and print by forty-four artists which make up Response are an eclectic, original mix that reflects a robust exchange of ideas, thoughts and possibilities and an invitation to join a larger conversation.

Response is the first exhibition of Split Collective’s 2026 season. Opening in Guernsey on 29th May, it will travel to London in August.

Opening Times:
Rectory at St Peter’s Church, 31st May to 16th August, weekends only, 10am to 4pm.

Gate House Gallery 30th-31st May and 6th/7th June, 10am-4pm

The public and the visiting artists are invited to explore the garden and the meadow surrounding the Rectory. The gardens are 150 years old and the meadow, which is glebe land, has been extant for many centuries. Still very much a work in progress, it is a place to feed the soul.
