An event giving candidates the chance to hear about the lived experiences of disabled people in Guernsey is being held on Monday, ahead of next week’s election.
The event has been organised by Aindre Reece-Sheerin, a wheelchair user and professionally trained Access Consultant.
He has been challenging election hopefuls on disability related issues – with candidate, and Managing Director of UnLtd at the Ron Short Centre, Dr Rob Harnish reaching out to him to arrange Monday’s event.
Dr Harnish said Mr Reece-Sheerin has raised some important issues.
“It is vital to create a platform for Aindre and other disabled islanders to help candidates better understand the lived experiences of those affected by societal and environmental barriers – barriers that impact an estimated 20% of our local population.”
Dr Harnish and Mr Reece-Sheerin are offering disabled people, carers, and candidates three-minute speaking slots so issues relating to disability and inclusivity can be discussed openly.
“Accessibility discriminates against no one,” said Mr. Reece-Sheerin. “So many of the provisions we can put in place to make the built environment more accessible and inclusive are essentially cost-free, while the impacton the independence and dignity of Disabled People is immeasurable.”
The event is being held at the Ron Short Centre on Monday 9 June.
Doors open at 19:00, with the event underway between 19:30-21:00.
