Guernsey Post is seeking the views of the public on proposals to reduce the number of roadside post boxes on the island due to a significant drop in usage.
They state that this is part of a plan to make the postal service more efficient and sustainable.
GP’s proposal suggests closing 96 of the island’s 141 post boxes, (68%). This would leave just 42 post boxes in their current position, and would see another three relocated.
The company claims their data shows that most of the boxes under consideration for closure are used for five items or fewer per day.
Steve Sheridan, Guernsey Post’s Chief Executive, said the decision was not taken lightly and that the company is committed to this public consultation: “We recognise that this proposal may be met with understandable reservations from some customers, and we want to assure everyone that this decision has not been taken lightly.
Mr Sheridan continued: “We are committed to consulting carefully with the public before making any final decisions. This proposed change reflects how people are using our services today and supports our goal of operating efficiently while maintaining accessible and reliable postal services.”
The informal consultation will run from 15 August to 12 September.
Islanders can provide feedback online on Guernsey Posts website HERE, or by looking for notices on the post boxes identified for potential closure.
