A 33-year-old man has been charged under Guernsey’s ‘terrorism law’ after allegedly making a hoax bomb threat.
It’s alleged he claimed there was a bomb inside Folies nightclub on Saturday night – when the club would have been packed with people celebrating Liberation Day.
He was arrested in the early hours of Sunday and a police spokesperson confirmed he was charged later in the day.
“Guernsey Police can confirm that the 33-year-old man who was arrested in the early hours of this morning (10th May) has been charged with bomb hoaxes, an offence under Section 74 of the Terrorism and Crime (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law 2002.”
The police spokesperson said the man was released on bail and is due to appear in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday 18 May.
A police cordon was originally set up around the Pollet and the Pier Steps blocking any entrance to the North Plantation where Les Folies D’Amour nightclub and other restaurants and bars are.
The cordon was removed by 09:00 but police tape remained across the front door to Folies.
Guernsey Police said their investigations continued with officers patrolling town last night, but the spokesperson said there was no further “risk or threat”.
They said the investigating officers are keen to speak with any witnesses or any of the staff or guests who were evacuated from Folies and then made their way home before speaking to police.
“We are not looking for any other suspects in connection with the incident and would again ask anyone with information to come forward,” they added.
“Specifically, anyone who was in Folies nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning who may have heard a threat being made.”
