Alderney residents have the chance to have their say on the future of the island’s marine spaces.

The States of Alderney has invited “islanders, marine users, businesses, and organisations” to take part in a survey and “help shape the future of Alderney waters”.

Guernsey’s Marine Spatial Plan Survey closed yesterday, having been taking place since May. Alderney’s is open until 10 July.

Alderney’s Marine Spatial Plan will manage Alderney’s 570 square miles of territorial waters, which extend out to 12 nautical miles.

According to the States, the plan will “help build a clearer long-term understanding of how Alderney waters are currently used”, but will need to strike a balance in “how those uses may evolve in future, and how different activities and interests can continue alongside one another over time”.

The Marine Spatial Plan is an “important priority” due to an increase in “activity and interest” within Alderney’s waters, noting a particular interest in the island’s offshore wind and tidal energy potential.

Bill Abel, the Chair of the Marine & Energy Working Group said: “The sea has always been central to Alderney’s history, identity and way of life, and it will continue to play an important role in the Island’s future.

“There is increasing interest in how Alderney waters may be used in future, including the opportunities linked to offshore wind and tidal energy.

“The Marine Spatial Plan provides an opportunity for the community to help shape those discussions from an early stage and ensure local knowledge and experience helps inform the way forward.”

The plan forms a wider net, as it’s been “dovetailed” with Guernsey’s MSP, and the States of Alderney said there are plans to hold discussions with Sark, and other neighbouring jurisdictions, to help address “shared interests”.

The survey is available on the States of Alderney website, or as a paper copy from the Island Hall. It’ll close on 10 July.
