Hundreds of people were due to brave a night of cold and discomfort to raise money for charity this evening, however following a review of the weather forecast, the fundraiser has had to be postponed.

The Met Office issued an orange wind warning which predicts south to south-easterly gale force 8 winds from around 15:00 today.

A spokesperson for Skipton said they had to consider the safety of everyone taking part in the planned overnight event.

The Sleep Out is intended to raise awareness of the risk of homelessness affecting hundreds of people in the island, as well as to raise money for Caritas, but the organisers said it had to be postponed.

“Following a review of the updated weather forecast and current site conditions at lunchtime, we have taken the decision to postpone the Sleep Out event today, with safety as our overriding priority,” a spokesperson explained.

“While we know how important it is for participants to sleep out in solidarity with those experiencing homelessness, we also have a clear duty of care to everyone involved.”

Last year the charity event aimed at helping the hidden homeless in Guernsey saw 150 shiver through a winter’s evening outside at the KGV, with more than £40,000 raised for Caritas as a result.

Even more were due to take part in the second annual fundraiser tonight, with each asked to bring in some sponsorship money to support the ongoing work of Caritas and its modular housing initiative.

The Skipton spokesperson said that “forecasts indicate that wind conditions are expected to worsen as the day progresses, increasing the risk to participants, volunteers and anyone on site.”

They added, “as a result, the Sleep Out will not go ahead today. We will share further information shortly on next steps, including options for rescheduling and how fundraising will continue.”

Just 15 days ago, the Channel Islands withstood a blustery night which brought down trees, walls, and saw debris damage cars.

Winds up to 111mph were recorded in Alderney, with at least 95mph recorded in Guernsey, and some of the gusts hitting hurricane strength of Force 12.

Although today’s weather is going to be much less severe with a forecast maximum wind strength of Force 8, the organisers of the Sleep Out said safety concerns meant they had to postpone the event.

Skipton said thank you to everyone who had committed to taking part knowing the January weather is often the worst the island experiences.

“Everyone who has signed up or fundraised remains a valued part of the event, and their contribution to raising awareness and funds is hugely appreciated,” said the spokesperson.

“This decision reflects our values. Supporting vulnerable people means acting responsibly, making informed choices, and putting safety first.

“Thank you to everyone for their understanding, flexibility and continued commitment to the cause.”
