Top Stories.

Friday is International Haiku Day, so we have five stories to share. Which ones had you nodding yes? And which made you seethe?

From freeing an “educational lobster” to a pan-island aviation mystery, here are the stories that read like poetry in the last seven days.

1. Nothing beats a jet or two

People all over the Channel Islands were craning their necks on Wednesday evening to work out what was causing a roaring sound in their skies.

Some eagle-eyed islanders spotted that it was a pair of French fighter jets – a theory later confirmed by Guernsey Ports.

2. Historic abuse at oldest school

Guernsey’s oldest school announced had launched an independent enquiry into claims of historic child abuse during the 1970s and 1980s.

Several former pupils later came forward to share their stories, alleging abuse at Elizabeth College.

3. Lobster activist in hot water

An animal-rights activist with links to Guernsey has landed herself in hot water, after trying to save a lobster from the same fate.

Emma Smart, whose husband is from the island, took a live lobster from a tank at a Dorset restaurant and put it in the sea.

4. Thank you ferry much, but no

Guernsey turned down the chance to give Channel Islanders more choice when travelling to and from Jersey.

Economic Development argued DFDS’ proposal would mean keeping the port open out of hours and didn’t provide “balanced, two-way connectivity between the islands”.

5. Dog died after hit and run

Police are looking for witnesses after an adorable dog was killed in a suspected hit and run near L’Ancresse Common.

The five-year-old Yorkshire Terrier / Pomeranian cross was hit by a “long, grey saloon car” three weeks ago.

All in a day’s work…

Some of the Guernsey’s top employers gathered at the Old Government House hotel to celebrate their success at a glamorous award ceremony.

All the winners in the ‘Guernsey’s Best Workplace Awards’ were voted for by staff, with trophies given out for everything from the company with the best line managers to firm that supported career development the most.
