Plans in to build new home for Jersey Bowling Club at Warwick Farm

Wednesday 18 May 2022

The Government has applied to planning to create a new home for the Jersey Bowling Club at Warwick Farm.

If passed, the field immediately to the right of the main entrance of the farm will become the bowls green, with a clubhouse, store and parking for 44 cars built nearby.

There will also be landscaping around the green and floodlighting.

In order for the plans to proceed, the field has to officially change use from ‘agriculture’ to ‘sport and fitness’.

The Jersey Bowling Club has been based on Westmount Road since 1910 but is being forced to move because of now-passed plans to alter the road to improve access to the new hospital at Overdale.

The Government announced last February that the club was moving to Warwick Farm, which is earmarked to become a ‘St Helier Country Park’ in the recently passed Bridging Island Plan.

However, the proposal fell through because the intention then was to build the club in the field to the left of the Warwick Farm entrance.

It returned as an option last December and the plan now is to site it in the larger field to the right.

Warwick Farm is currently the home of Jersey Hemp, who signed a nine-year lease in 2017 with the Government, which has now served notice to break it. However, the proposed club is not on land currently used by the business.

An agreement between the Government and the Parish of St. Helier, which owns the current Jersey Bowls Club site, is yet to be reached.

The Government offered £6.5m for various plots surrounding Westmount Road, as well as a “land swap” to relocate the Jersey Bowling Club from the area to Warwick Farm.

Yesterday, Environment Minister John Young gave planning permission for the new hospital to be built at Overdale.
