There was plenty to wag about at L’Ancresse on Sunday, as more than 90 dogs and their owners turned out for Guernsey Mind’s second annual Walkies event.

The mental health charity held the walk on 1 November, after postponing it by a week, and was rewarded with what organisers described as perfect conditions.

“We are delighted with the turnout this year and have met so many wonderful dogs and their owners,” said Amanda Hibbs, Guernsey Mind’s Communications and Events Lead.

“It was lovely to see so many wagging tails and smiling faces.”

The event aimed to celebrate the bond between people and their pets, while highlighting the benefits of getting outside, staying active and connecting with others.

‘Great listeners’

Amanda said caring for a pet could also help support mental health and wellbeing by bringing routine to people’s days and offering loyal companionship.

“Pets are great listeners who never judge,” she said.

There were plenty of treats on offer for the four-legged walkers, with every dog receiving a goodie bag at the finish line.

Treats were donated by RH Gaudion, Pukka Tukka, Trim Dog, and Venture Petrol and Pets, while two luxury hampers packed with doggy goodies were up for grabs for those who raised sponsorship.

The Kiosk at L’Ancresse also offered walkers a discount to help keep them refreshed, while photographers were on hand to capture the occasion. A special doggy photo frame proved particularly popular.

Gravity Group sponsored the event, with Vicki Merrien saying the company was delighted to support it again.

“It’s been exciting to see so many different dogs taking part and all the different breeds. There’s been a great atmosphere as well,” she said.

One returning walker said the event had been “really well organised”, adding that they had taken part last year and were pleased to come back.

Money raised will go towards Guernsey Mind’s work promoting mental health and wellbeing across the Bailiwick.
