A convent has been scammed in what Guernsey Police are treating as a fraud case.
The nuns are understood to have paid £10,000 to two men who have since been arrested on suspicion of defrauding them out of the money by pretending to be police officers who said that they needed cash as part of an investigation.
A spokesperson for Guernsey Police said the pair were arrested after going to the UK by ferry. The money was recovered too.
“They asked for (the money) to be left in a specific location for collection and then travelled to the island by ferry to collect it,” the police spokesperson explained.
“Officers were able to track and identify them through CCTV and have them arrested when they got off their return ferry arriving in the UK, recovering the money in the process.”
Enquiries are now ongoing, but officers are concerned the men could have also been targeting other local churches or organisations while pretending to be representing the emergency services.
“We’d ask anyone who has experienced a suspicious phone call from ‘police’ – particularly between the 12th May and today – or any other forms of contact to get in touch with police urgently to assist with the investigation.”
Guernsey Police can be called on 222 222.
