10 years ago to the day, a computer programmer in America tapped out a simple message online.
And with that, Twitter – or twttr as it once was – took off. It now has around 320 million users worldwide.
So to celebrate the social network reaching this milestone birthday, we’ve picked out 10 tweets that are iconic for one of two reasons – they represent a significant moment in time, or they just made everyone laugh a lot.
1. When Obama was re-elected.
2. When Ed Balls did this.
3. When Cait was born (and set a new world record for the fastest time to reach 1m followers).
4. When Kanye was having one of his “streams of consciousness”.
5. When everyone questioned how it’s even possible to #HateFilms.
6. When religion got social.
(and when it also got lyrical)
7. When someone tweeted NOT from Earth.
8. When the Oscars broke the internet – and retweet records.
9. When two Mars missions greeted each other.
10. And when a global conversation started over #TheDress.
