Video game fans have the chance to dive into a pool of pixel art nostalgia this weekend as a new museum exhibition containing the UK’s biggest gaming collection goes on show in Portsmouth.
Game Over: The Future Of The Past contains games from the last 40 years, as well as an array of home computers and consoles dating back to the original Pong.
A selection of the games and consoles included in the exhibition at the Portsmouth Museum will also be open to visitors to play, and a range of other events will run alongside the exhibit itself – including a pixel artwork session with local artist Kendal James.
Game Over has been put together by Steve Lowe, a gamer, collector and founder of a gaming cafe of the same name in Portsmouth.
“I want to take people on a journey through the evolution of gaming. A couple of years ago I started visiting exhibitions and displays of gaming in the UK and realised there was nothing really out there for people interested in the history of gaming. That’s when I got the idea for both the cafe and the museum exhibition.
“The exhibition will be a hands-on experience that I want to appeal to veteran gamers and newbies alike. I’m hoping it’s something they want to visit again and again, but I also think there will be an element of surprise for a lot of people – they just don’t expect to find gaming in a museum.”
Modern consoles will be part of the exhibition too, which will trace the history of the platform as a form of entertainment.
The exhibition opens on May 28.
