Amazon has moved to improve the sleep of its tablet users by rolling out a software update that filters out the blue light waves emitted from screens, something scientists say has a major impact on sleep.
The aim is to make late-night reading more pleasant as well as having less of an impact on the sleep that follows it.
Scientists have said that blue light makes it harder to sleep – sunlight contains a lot of it – and the new feature will filter this out and enable the brain to keep a more natural sleep pattern, Amazon says.
The new feature will appear in the settings menu under the title ‘blue shade’, but as well as being able to filter light users will have the ability to add warmer colours to the screen, as well as decrease the display brightness even more than usual.
As well as the filtering for sleepers, Amazon’s update also included a new parental control toll called Activity Centre which gives parents the ability to monitor how much tablet time their children are spending playing games or watching movies, as well as reading.
The Centre also includes the option to check a child’s browser history.
