Branding is a big deal to Apple, with the firm having long established itself and its products just as much as a fashion statement as piece of helpful technology.
So industry tongues have been set wagging by appearing to refer to its desktop software – OS X – as MacOS in a statement on Earth Day.
In the announcement that was detailing the apps that would be taking part in a special Apps for Earth promotion on the App Store, the maker of the iPhone and iPad reeled off the names of its software when discussing product life.
“Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for MacOS and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices.”
No sign of OS X, despite mentioning every major platform Apple currently runs suggests a re-brand is close at hand.
It would be timely too with the annual update to the software that powers the desktop Mac and laptop MacBook line due at the company’s annual developer conference, WWDC, which takes place in June. A new name is revealed every year for updates within OS X – 2015′s was El Capitan, but this would be the first time since 1999 that Apple will have veered away from the OS X name.
