As soon as the summer arrives, along with the (sometimes) warmer weather comes the inevitable wave of iPhone rumours.

Apple tradition these days is that the next generation of iPhone is revealed each September – we’ve already had the added bonus of the SE being revealed in March – but an iPhone 7 is still very much on the cards for early autumn.

The long-standing rumour for the 2016 iPhone is that Apple will remove the headphone jack from the phone, sparking a mass-market move to wireless headphones and those which connect via USB-C, the connector that is working its way onto new smartphones and Apple is rumoured to be considering adopting too, having already launched it on the MacBook.

But, according to the Wall Street Journal, that might be it for innovation this year, because Apple is considering holding off on the big changes until 2017, which marks the tenth anniversary of the iPhone’s launch.

The feeling is that Apple does not want to mark the anniversary with ‘just’ an iPhone 7s – the s-line being seen more as an incremental step between the big revamps. Instead, the technology giant wants to mark the anniversary in style, it’s been suggested with a major overhaul that could involve a wraparound OLED display for the first time.

Of course this also leaves the question of what this year’s iPhone will be called if iPhone 7 is held off until next year. iPhone 6SE? 6.5? iPhone Nano, maybe?
