Apple has made no secret of its green and environmental policy, often using segments of live events to discuss what it’s doing to reduce environmental impact.
The next move in that plan appears to be swapping out the plastic bags currently used in the firm’s retail stores for recycled ones made from paper.
In a memo reportedly sent to retail store staff and obtained by Apple new site 9to5Mac, Apple says it plans to switch to paper on April 15, as well as asking staff to encourage customers to be more environmentally friendly and not take a bag if they don’t really need one.
Apple has used used paper bags in the past, handing them out for the launch of the Apple Watch complete with colourful rope handles.
During the company’s live event last month, vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives Lisa Jackson noted that Apple’s packaging will eventually be moved to paper too. She also said that 93% of the company’s global operations were being powered by renewable energy and discussed the Apple Renew scheme, which hands out gift cards to those who recycle their iOS device by returning it to an Apple Store.
This led to the debut of the star the event – robot Liam who is used to dismantle returned iPhones so they can be recycled.
