Are Apple and Samsung replacing fingerprint ID with iris scanners?

Do you remember the excitement people felt when it was announced that smartphones would have fingerprint scanners built in?

Now, a few years on and with technology improving all the time, sources suggest that the two smartphone giants Apple and Samsung are preparing to take it to the next level – with iris recognition technology.

Digitimes suggests that Samsung is expected to make the upgrade first, maybe even as soon as later this year – while the iPhone won’t feature iris scanning technology until 2018.

But if you do remember how excited some people were about fingerprint technology you might also remember how suspicious others were, something that’s unlikely to be different this time around.

Apple already owns patents regarding facial recognition technology and recently bought Emotient, a startup whose technology can read facial emotions, so maybe it’s a matter of when rather than if for the introduction of iris ID.
