Times tables on tablets and science on smartphones could soon become a familiar scene in classrooms across the country.

Many teachers believe the use of technology as an educational aid could help significantly boost exam results, a survey has found.

A quarter of teachers (25%) think the use of smartphones and tablets in the classroom could boost exam results by at least one grade, the poll said.

Technology such as laptops and interactive whiteboards are now a staple of every lesson for more than a third of teachers (35%).

Students are also allowed to use their own smartphones and tablets throughout the day for educational purposes by more than a quarter of teachers (29%).

Unlocking a child’s creativity in the classroom can be done through the use of technology and the internet, believe 35% of teachers, the YouGov poll for Virgin Media Business found.

Parents’ evening could also be a digital process one day, as one in seven teachers think the parent-teacher meeting could be conducted via Skype.

Peter Kelly, managing director of Virgin Media Business, said: “Generation Tech reveals how technology and digital learning is proving an ever-more important part of our education system.

“Not only does tech support teachers and improves their ability to teach, but it also unlocks pupils’ creativity and ultimately improves grades.

“We’re proud to support thousands of schools up and down the country by bringing them the fastest broadband to support learning in the classroom, be that to simply search the web right through to stream a live seminar into the lesson.”
