Back To The Future fans had a very large dose of excitement this week as the day Marty McFly travelled forward to – October 21 2015 – became the present.
And as if that wasn’t enough – Nike went and made fans’ Back To The Future Day by unveiling an ACTUAL pair of self-tying shoes, as sported by Marty in Part II of the trilogy.
To top it all off, Nike gave the first pair to Michael J. Fox, who played Marty in the film all those years ago.
In a handwritten letter, legendary Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield teased the actor.
The note read: “We wanted you to be the first to receive a pair… In addition to your personal pair, we’re creating more pairs for support in aid of the Foundation in 2016.”
And true to his word – the shoes of the future materialised.
More pairs of the magical shoes will be released in spring 2016 – but don’t run to queue at your nearest Nike store quite yet.
The trainers will be sold by auction, with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Nike collaborated with the film’s makers to create the original pair 30 years ago and are pretty pleased with the result.
“We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes”, president and chief executive Mark Parker said.
