Benedict Cumberbatch’s role in radio drama Rumpole Of The Bailey helped the BBC iPlayer Radio app achieve one million downloads in less than a month.

The BBC, which launched a new 30-day download functionality on the app last month, said that Radio 4′s drama output has proved to be most popular by a wide margin.

Including Cumberbatch’s return as barrister Horace Rumpole, as well as Diamonds Are Forever and Silk: The Clerk’s Room, Radio 4 dramas have been downloaded a combined total of more than 81,000 times.

Since the roll-out in July, BBC Radio 1′s Summer Mix has received 47,446 downloads, while soap series The Archers has notched up 45,314 downloads.

The most popular day for downloading programmes is Sunday – with a peak around 10pm – as people prepare for the week ahead.

Andrew Scott, general manager of radio and music, BBC Digital, said: “We knew from the success of our podcast service that there was a demand to download BBC Radio and Music content to listen to whenever they wanted too.

“But hitting one million downloads across the whole of BBC Radio and Music has far surpassed our expectations. We’re looking forward to bringing audiences even more features like this over the coming months.”
