The video game Baftas were handed out last night, with the big console titles among the winners. But, there was also some success for mobile games – including their very own category.
So this week, our apps round-up has some real pedigree as we highlight some of the mobile-based nominees recognised by Bafta.
This stunning piece of artwork picked up two awards – and rightly so. Monument Valley is a game that messes with your perspective as you guide the silent Princess Ida through a range of very cool-looking worlds, dodging obstacles as well as the Crow People. The 3D nature of the game and the angle from which you play it toys with your visual perspective very playfully. A great game that will absorb you completely.

A steam punk take on the Phileas Fogg tale of travelling around the world in 80 days. Players can take different routes and race other players in order to complete the trek, circumnavigating the world and exploring cities as you go.
(iOS/Android – £3.99)
A brilliant new take on the popular console series, Hitman GO takes all the ruthless stealth action of the assassin-driven game and turns it into a turn-by-turn 3D board game. In theory it may sound like shaky ground, but it’s been elegantly put together to produce a mobile-gaming experience that is second-to-none for the platform.
(iOS – £3.99)
Like all great puzzle games, Threes! is simple as a concept. You start the game with coloured number blocks. Only 1s and 2s can be added together in order to make 3. One you get here, things escalate quickly – only numbers of the same value can be added together in order to double them; so 3+3, 6+6 etc. The aim is to get the numbers in your grid as high as possible without running out of space.
(iOS – £1.49)
A game that has proved as popular as the TV series, Season 2 builds on the tension that the TV series is known for, but adds to it with a comic book style of artwork and storytelling. The decisions you make also affect the action, making it an immersive experience too.
