The best apps of the week

This week’s apps round-up is designed to cheer you up given the miserable turn the summer weather has taken.

There’s plenty of colour, as well as a trip to an exotic island – ideal for brightening up that commute.

Here’s our pick of the best new downloads.

Paradise Bay

(King)
(King)

A notable release as this is the new game from King, who know a thing or two about creating mobile games – they’re the team behind Candy Crush. Paradise Bay is a change of direction for them however, as this is a world-building game set on an idyllic island. You take on the role of Trademaster, and must grow and manage resources in order to grow the island. It’s nicely animated and well-paced. In short, exactly the sort of things you want in a casual mobile game.

(iOS/Android -Free)

Fallout Shelter

(Bethesda)
(Bethesda)

The mobile spin-off from the award-winning console series, Fallout Shelter sees players take command of their own nuclear shelter – filling it with inhabitants and managing their lives. It sticks to the Fallout universe (complete with the uniforms), and you can even create love stories and ultimately children for your shelter. The game originally appeared on iOS on the day Fallout 4 was announced for consoles at E3 back in June. But now it’s arrived on Android too.

(iOS/Android – Free)

Nitro Punch Car Game

(Na3m Games)
(Na3m Games)

Remember Destruction Derby, the PSOne game? Well Nitro Punch is very much in that spirit, where players create and customise their cars and then take to the battle arena. There’s some street racing too to keep things interesting, but the general carnage does a pretty good job of that.

(iOS – Free)

The Simpsons: Tapped Out

(EA)
(EA)

One of the most popular mobile titles out there has had quite an iconic update. The infamous Monorail has been added to Tapped Out for players to build. You’ll notice that the app’s icon has changed to commemorate this too. One of the most engrossing world builders out there just got a little better.

(iOS/Android – Free)

WonderBox

(Duck Duck Moose)
(Duck Duck Moose)

A colourful and clever app, WonderBox is designed to be an enticing learning environment for entire families, encouraging users to get creative across various subjects. The app lets users explore different topics including music, science and design – then take part in creative projects based on each. This mainly revolves around using stickers and editing tools on relevant images, but it’s good fun nonetheless.

(iOS – Free)
