The best new apps of the week

It’s January, the weather is rubbish, you have little money to play with, and frankly you’re not entirely sure you’d want to leave the house if you could afford to do so.

But fear not, an answer to the January blues is right in front of you in the form of your smartphone or tablet.

Here are the biggest joys you’ll find in the apps world this week.

The Westport Independent

Now this one will mean actually parting with some cash, but the concept and execution of this unique game is well worth it. You are the editor of a national newspaper in a country where censorship and government control is rife. It’s your job to edit the newspaper accordingly – dealing with the effects your choices make on the population. An incredibly riveting idea that is done in style. We only wish the game was longer.

(iOS – £3.99)

Music Memos

On one level this appears to be just another audio-based note-taking app. But Music Memos is so much more, being smart enough to know the chords and tempo you’re playing at, as well as the instrument you’re playing. It’s a brilliant way to organise something you probably didn’t know how to organise or log properly until now.

(iOS – Free)

Football Unleashed Jamaal Charles

Named after the Kansas City Chiefs running back, Football Unleashed is arcade-style, one-tap American Football. Essentially, a very complicated sport boiled down to a very digestible and enjoyable mobile game. Pick your play and then use taps and swipes to throw the ball, spin and juke away from tacklers as you make your way to the endzone. The Super Bowl is just around the corner so it’s the perfect time to get back into the NFL.

(iOS – Free)

ShareTheMeal

For something a little more generous, we now come to ShareTheMeal. This is an app from the United Nations, and essentially boils down to ending global hunger. The app works by asking users to ‘share their meal’ by tapping to donate the 50 US cents it takes to feed a starving child for a day. The idea is you can do this as often as you like, maybe as you sit down to eat yourself.

(iOS – Free)

GIF Keyboard

Finishing on a lighter note, what could be better than a whole host of GIFs at your disposal? Nothing, and that’s exactly what GIF keyboard gives you, ready to be used at the opportune moment across all your messaging and social media. Go nuts.
