Britain’s smallest pub is opening in Greenwich – it’s big enough to fit only two punters – and will only let you in if you give up your smartphone while inside.
The tiny craft beer bar, which measures just 6ft by 8ft, can be booked out any time between midday and 9pm over the course of a week from October 21 as a digital oasis where visitors can appreciate their company without any distractions.
Giving up your phone is worth it, though – you’ll get a free drink if you do.
It’s the work of London craft brewer Meantime as part of its Make Time For It campaign, which is celebrating six craftspeople from around the UK – whose work has been used to furnish and decorate the pub.
It includes wallpaper from Bespoke Atelier in Glasgow and pint glasses hand blown by James Adlington of Bristol Blue Glass. With smartphones and the distraction they bring out of the way, Meantime says it hopes to create the perfect drinking environment and encourage visitors to “catch up with a mate over a beer”.
The pub, which will sit in Peninsula Square next to North Greenwich Underground Station, has been designed to promote the importance of time, which is why the resident barman will be asking for smartphones to be handed over for the duration of your stay.
A recent Ofcom survey found that we’re spending 24 hours a week online on our smartphones, with the Office for National Statistics adding that 262 million texts are sent each day between us in the UK.
