One of the many things Back To The Future taught us is that hoverboards would be a thing by 2015, and it was right.

Lexus has posted a video online of its concept hoverboard, named Slide. And it’s quite a sight.

The technology behind it involves magnets and liquid nitrogen to cool semiconductors in the board. This all helps to keep it level, hovering around 4cm above the ground.

But even that doesn’t make it completely controllable, as the video shows – but we’ll let them off considering this a pretty new idea.

Luckily, Lexus has shared how the technology works – using magnetic tracks to push the board upwards. Think of that reaction you get when trying to push similarly charged magnets together and you get the idea. So yes, the skate park in the video was specially built for it, and is covered in magnets.

But before you get too excited about taking to the streets on one, Lexus has admitted the whole thing was a stunt for an advert and won’t be coming into production any time soon.

Still, we can dream.
