Virtual reality headset Oculus Rift will be available to purchase in UK stores next month.
Oculus, which is owned by Facebook, said the device will launch in the UK on September 20 and will be sold at a retail price of £549.
The headset is already available to pre-order at Amazon, John Lewis, PC World, GAME and Harrods and demonstration experiences will be rolled out across the country in the coming weeks – giving consumers the opportunity to try the Rift before buying.
These will include The Climb, a VR game based on extreme rock climbing, Henry, a movie about a hedgehog narrated by actor Elijah Wood and Farlands, a game where users can travel across alien planets.
Will Jones, of John Lewis, said: “We’ve seen interest in virtual reality rise dramatically in the last few months, with sales of the Samsung Gear VR, powered by Oculus, headset up 310% in the last six weeks alone.
“The Oculus Rift device is a significant progression in virtual reality technology, set to reinvent how we work and play.”
The Rift is bundled with a copy of Lucky’s Tale – an adventure game designed exclusively for the Rift and comes with access to Oculus Store’s collection of other VR games and experiences.
The news comes as Minecraft officially launches on the Rift.
Minecraft, Mojang’s world-building game, is already playable on the Samsung Gear VR, and anyone who owns the Windows 10 Beta Edition of the game can now play it on their Rift headset at no extra cost.
