US supermarket chain Walmart is said to be working with a robotics firm to create driverless trolleys that guide customers around its stores.
According to reports, the intelligent trolleys will enable users to scan an item from their shopping list and then be guided to the right aisle and shelf by the trolley.
It is said the technology is seen as a way for the physical store to compete with the convenience that is offered to online shoppers by Amazon and other sites.
Reports in the US suggest that prototypes are already in development – while item scanning technology is already in place – with customers able to scan and purchase items from their smartphone.
There have also been suggestions that Walmart is toying with the idea of drone-based delivery, something Amazon is already invested in and expected to roll out in the future, having made several promotional videos teasing the technology.
