In a big step forward for the world of in-flight entertainment, Virgin America and Netflix have announced a new partnership that will see the streaming service become fully available on flights.
The airline has confirmed its new wifi system, provided by telecoms firm ViaSat, enables higher internet speeds and means users can now access the full Netflix catalogue on their mobile devices during flights for free until March next year. The new system will also see Netflix built-in to seatback TVs on Virgin America planes.
On personal devices, Virgin America says that when users log on to the on-board wifi network they will immediately be prompted to sign in to their existing Netflix account, or sign up for a free 30-day trial.
For now, the whole thing is limited to the US-based airline, but does fire a starting pistol on better wifi on planes that could hopefully see more airlines enter the fray. A future of long-haul flights passed effortlessly by binge-watching an entire season of House of Cards is a world we would all like to live in.
To celebrate the launch of the scheme, the airline has even decorated some of its planes accordingly.
Take note, rest of the world.
