Google to make more emojis representing professional women

A few months ago, a small group of employees at Google wanted to do something about the fact that emojis weren’t reflecting gender equality.

So they created a new set of emojis to better represent women in the workplace and submitted it to Unicode Consortium – the international group that regulates software – for approval.

Now 11 of those emojis have been given the thumbs up, including a chef, a scientist and a rockstar that resembles David Bowie – just in time for World Emoji Day on July 17.

They will be available in all skin tones and with both male and female versions.

It appears the only two emojis on Google’s proposal that weren’t approved are a dentist and an assembly line worker.

In addition, Unicode is also adding both male and female versions of 33 existing emoji – like the private eye, the police and the surfer.

In its blog post, Google points out that until now the professional emojis for women were limited to a hairdresser, a bride and a princess – which to be honest, weren’t really career options.

“These new emoji are one of several efforts we’re making to better represent women in technology, and to connect girls with the education and resources they need to pursue careers in STEM [science curriculum],” Nicole Bleuel, Google’s marketing lead and diversity champion, wrote in a blog post.

The new emojis should be available in future versions of Android and on other Google platforms.
