Google Street View has always been a clever tool – for researching holiday destinations or areas you could move to – but it’s never been a seamless experience.
That could be beginning to change thanks to a new app built by developer Brian Folts. Called Google Maps Streetview Player, it asks users for a start point and destination before stitching together Streetview images along the route to create a visual showcase of the journey.
It’s simple but clever, and gives users the chance to glimpse what certain road trips might be like. Not only that, it supports footpaths and cycling paths too, so should you want to plan a walk or bike ride, you can.
However the app is far from perfect – expect it to crash on you a few times in the browser. However there is an Android app version on the Google Play Store should you want to try it out on your smartphone or tablet.
Once a route begins to play out, users also have the choice of slowing down or speeding up the various frames as they go, as well as being able to download any route they create.
