Google is a big believer in open-sourcing, the technology giant is already asking users to suggest names for Android N and has now launched a new app designed to turn all of us into scientists.
Science Journal is the app in question – putting all the sensors in your phone to good use to record and measure data in real time. This data can then be displayed in charts and graphs, and Google has partnered with Exploratorium to create physical kits for carrying out experiments which users can buy.
“See something you want to measure? How much light is in my room compared to outside? How loud is the dog’s bark compared to my cough?,” said Google.
“Record your observations in real-time at the press of a button. Explore your environment or measure things you’ve built yourself.”
Users can also make notes on any observations they make, both in note and voice form, and then make conclusions based on what they find.
Google’s Making Science website also contains tips on six starter experiments to try out initially, including two that involve using extra sensors – or even building them yourself.
The app is free to download on Android.
