Destiny was created to be the next big gaming universe when it first launched in 2014, with the developer team behind Halo teaming up with Activision, publishers of the gaming behemoth that is Call Of Duty.
Since then there’s been a host of expansion packs to the original game, as well as waves of updates to keep the huge and incredibly social online universe moving.
At Gamescom this year, the next big expansion for the game has been on show. It’s called Rise Of Iron and though it has been known about for some time, few have had much play time for it.
At the heart of it is an entirely new campaign that involves players exploring the world and lore of the Iron Lords, working towards becoming one themselves.
Not all of this was on show at Gamescom, but we did get to see some of the multiplayer mode, which is arguably what interests a lot of fans most.
Rise Of Iron introduces a new six-versus-six online mode called Supremacy, where players have to grab crests of rival players after completing a kill as part of the scoring system.
Not only that, but Bungie and Activision has also revealed a new Strike mission called The Wretched Eye, which sees a team of three combing an abandoned missile silo in Old Russia that has become a hive for a biologist of the Fallen and his creations.
It has also been announced at the show that private matches are being introduced to the Crucible multiplayer mode.
Alongside these new features there are new settings and new maps, but everything still feels very Destiny. The combat is still very fast and frenetic. It still feels “tall” too, with players coming at you from multiple angles above and below you with all manner of weapons and spells.
Rise Of Iron’s campaign adds a new layer of lore and history to this franchise’s universe, but for its multiplayer combat fans it offers an extension of the existing fun too.
