One of the biggest selling points, and most intriguing aspects, of this week’s iOS 9 update was the new News app.
Apple curating news stories for users for the first time sounded fascinating – there are already plenty of very popular apps that do this, but to see Apple take a swing at it with its reach and brand power was also going to be worth a look.
But users in the UK were left disappointed when iOS 9 finished downloading on their devices and News was nowhere to be seen. Apple hasn’t offered an explanation, other than that the app will be rolling out in regions outside the US in time.
However, all is not lost, and should you be extremely keen to try out the app, you can actually get hold of it. Here’s how.
Go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad. Once you get here, you want to head to General, and then scroll down to Language & Region. Within this menu there’s a Region option – tap on it and then select the United States from the list.
This will restart your device as it reconfigures itself for that reason, a process that will last around 20 seconds. Once your device has rebooted however, the News app should have been added to your home screen.
Be warned though, if you want to keep the app, you’ll need to keep the US setting. If you switch back to the UK the app will disappear, and won’t reappear even if you switch back again to the US. There aren’t any issues with keeping your device on the US-region setting, calls and messages won’t be affected by the change. The date will be displayed differently automatically, and the $ sign and £ both move on the keyboard. But if you can live with that, then you can keep the News app.
