Chinese technology giant Huawei has unveiled two new prototype batteries; that can fully recharge in minutes using a special charger.
The smartphone maker has created a larger capacity battery that can by charged by 48% in five minutes, while the smaller battery charges even quicker; 68% in two minutes.
However, the smaller of the two is not big enough to power a smartphone for long.
Battery life remains arguably the biggest hurdle for many tech firms who want to improve the performance of their devices. The Google Glass – thought at one point to be the beginning of the next generation of wearables – struggled with overheating and the lifespan of each battery cycle.
Current generation smartphones and smartwatches also struggle to last longer than two days.
In March, Samsung announced the batteries in their Galaxy S6 smartphones could last four hours from just a 10-minute charge.
But the issue still needs a permanent solution, and extensive research is ongoing into the subject, with scientists looking at alternative materials to the lithium-ion that is currently used.
The Huawei batteries shown in the test were made using heteroatoms – which are not carbon or hydrogen, and Huawei says can increase charging speeds.
