Over the weekend, the biggest eSports event in Call Of Duty history took place in California as the finals of the game’s World League Championship took place.
There was some very positive news for the UK too as British team Splyce came second, only losing out to Team EnVyUs of the US in the grand final. A final that had a prize pot £600,000 for the winners. Yes – that’s the prize fund for playing competitive video games.
It’s no small prospect though, with the teams playing out their matches in front of a full arena at the Forum in Inglewood on the edge of LA, while Snoop Dogg was getting ready for a set to close the event.
As Jordan ‘JKAP’ Kaplan, captain of the triumphant EnVyUs team said: “Winning this event, in front of this crowd is a dream come true.
“The energy, the tension, and the competition were all amazing. This is a moment that I will remember for the rest of my life.”
He was also more than happy to show off his second championship ring on Twitter.
But this wasn’t just about the eSports carnival that was unfolding in front of thousands in the arena, with many more watching the streams online.
There was also the small matter of some major Call Of Duty multiplayer announcements. First up, a first look at the multiplayer mode in this year’s upcoming instalment, Infinite Warfare.
If you’re really interested, there’s a more in-depth look at it here.
But not only that, one of the most critically acclaimed games in the series – Modern Warfare – is also back this year having been remastered for current generation consoles. We also got a first look at that game’s multiplayer mode.
Throw in the epic space-based Infinite Warfare campaign mode, and of course David Hasselhoff being the star of zombies spin-off Zombies And Spaceland, and November – when all this becomes available – suddenly looks quite busy.
