Sheffield foursome 65daysofstatic were given the mammoth task of creating the music to accompany an infinite universe. How does one even go about such a thing?

“The project has pushed us to explore new processes and techniques, to rethink our relationship with our own music, and to essentially soundtrack every thread of a ‘choose your own adventure’ novel that only exists in our minds. We’re really proud of the results,” the band told Vice.

No Man's Sky landscape
(Hello Games)

No Man’s Sky, as you’ve no doubt heard by now, is an exploration game so huge that one of the lead developers claimed it would take five billion years to visit every single planet.

It has no plot, as such, with each gamer deciding whether they want their player to be a benevolent explorer or a ruthless one, with these choices shaping your future in the game. There are roughly 18 quintillion worlds in No Man’s Sky, so the music you hear while exploring them is important. Here’s what you can expect.

The soundtrack will be completely ambient and generative, developing as you get “further” in the game and designed to match your surroundings – and, coupled with the stunning 1960s-style sci-fi graphics, No Man’s Sky promises to be an experience as much as a game.

We can’t wait.

The Hello Games project is released in the UK on June 24. You can get your pre-orders in now.
