Credit card firm MasterCard has announced that its customers using Apple Pay will be able to travel on the London transport network for free on Mondays for the next month.
As part of a scheme it’s calling Fare Free Mondays, those using MasterCard with the iPhone’s mobile payment system will be refunded for their journeys on the Underground, buses, DLR, trams and National Rail services in the capital.
The scheme will begin on Monday November 23 and run over the following three Mondays, ending on December 14.
Since contactless began being accepted on the transport network last year, MasterCard says more than 220 million journeys have been made using contactless cards and devices, with more than a million journeys being made each day.
MasterCard’s Mark Barnett said: “The move by TfL last year to accept contactless cards and devices on London Underground has been a phenomenal catalyst to the growth in contactless payments across the UK.
“Now that Apple Pay has arrived we want to encourage travellers on London’s transport network to try it out and give them another convenient option to pay for their travel. What better way to do this, than to offer MasterCard customers using Apple Pay the chance to travel for free over the next four consecutive Mondays.”
The company confirmed that refunds would be capped at £27.90 for a full day’s travel.
Rival mobile payment systems from Samsung and Google are both expected to launch in the UK in 2016, while Barclaycard already has its own solution in bPay – contactless chips fitted into wearables that can be linked to any bank account.
