Finding it difficult to sleep at night? Maybe you’ve got the wrong bed.
One start-up company wants to change all that with a “smart bed” that promises to transform your life for the better.
Balluga, which recently launched on Kickstarter, has already smashed its $50,000 (£35,200) target on the crowdfunding website.
But just how “smart” is this bed?
Balluga is powered by its app that allows you to adjust various settings – such as firmness and temperature – and comes with a vibrating massage function (nope we aren’t kidding!) to help you relax as you drift into sleep.
And how does it work?
The answer lies in a mattress that is made up of little air-filled spherical cells that can deflate and inflate according to the instructions you provide through the app. The air cells are made using a soft inflatable elastic membrane material that is around two millimetres thick.
“More air cells means more spring potential,” says Joe Katan, Balluga’s founder and CEO. “And that means more bounce. By increasing or decreasing the air, you can make the mattress more firm or more soft.”
However, before you start thinking sleeping on an air-filled mattress is the most uncomfortable thing on the planet, Katan is here to set the records straight.
“The mattress is very solid but, at the same time, feels very light to sleep on,” he adds.
“It may look like an ordinary mattress but, unlike most beds, it will never sag – because the ball-based air suspension system is able to retain optimum shape.”
This bed not only promises to adjust and customise the firmness and surrounding temperature, but also tracks your vitals and saves all the information while you have a good night’s sleep.
In fact, Katan even goes as far as to say these beds could also help in stopping people from having nightmares by recording your core body temperature other data and learning to adjust the settings accordingly – so you wake up before the nightmare actually happens.
“We have moved from a bed that does nothing to a bed that will do almost everything you can imagine,” says Katan. “And we are working really hard to add useful things to it.”
Prices on Kickstarter start from $1,499 (£1,055) for double mattress and $1,199 (£844) for a single mattress. Bed bases cost extra.
